Travel Medicine Q & A

What is travel medicine?

Travel medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on preventive care, making sure you don’t get sick when traveling abroad. The team at Getachew Health Center specializes in travel medicine and can provide the care you need, so you stay healthy while traveling.

The team stays on top of global health issues and concerns, as well as the various immunization requirements for various countries to provide its patients with the most up-to-date information and care.

What can I expect during a travel medicine appointment?

You can expect a comprehensive travel medicine appointment when you come in to see the specialists at Getachew Health Center. During your appointment, the team asks detailed questions about your destination, your previous trips, past medical history, and family history. They also review your immunization records and perform a physical exam.

The team then spends time talking to you about any precautions you may need to take based on your travel destination. This may include food and water safety and the types of animals you need to avoid.

The team also discusses traveler’s diarrhea and may provide you with a prescription to help treat the infection if contracted. They also review how to protect yourself from various insects that carry infectious diseases, such as mosquitoes and ticks.

You then receive a list of items to carry in your travel health kit, including prescriptions for any medications you take for a chronic illness, as well as treatments to ease any health issues that may occur while abroad. The team may also talk to you about traveler’s insurance in case you need medical care while traveling.

In addition to education, the team also updates your immunizations to protect you from any infectious diseases common to your destination, but not common in the United States. You may receive immunizations to protect you from diseases such as:

  • Cholera
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • MMR
  • Typhoid fever
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Rabies
  • Yellow fever

Available testings and services include COVID-19 Antibodies as well as IgG and IgM Blood Testing in collaboration with Access Medical Lab.

You should schedule your travel medicine appointment at Getachew Health Center as soon as you book your trip. Vaccinations take a few weeks to become effective, and some vaccines may require more than one injection. Your appointment should be made at least one month prior to your date of travel.
